New DWI Sentencing in NJ

Friday, August 23rd, 2019 Gov. Murphy signed into law changes to the sentencing of first-time DWI offenders.  Previously, if convicted of DWI or refusal you were looking at seven (7) months loss of your NJ driving privilege. Now the loss is less but you must install an ignition interlock device – if your blood alcohol level is shown to be 0.08 to 0.10 – must install for six months with license suspension of 30 days; 0.10 to 0.15 –  six months to a year with license suspension of 45 days; 0.15 and above- one year to 18 months with license suspension of 90 days. This change does not appear to take effect immediately or reference 2nd and 3rd offenders.
